Software engineering is a challenging and rewarding profession. Software engineers earn an average of $106,000 a year. And there’s a lot of demand for these professionals, there are roughly 200,000 unfilled positions in the United States right now.

However, like any profession, it takes time to develop expertise.

This article delves into how I spend my day as a Software engineer so that you know what to expect before you start your journey.

A day in the life of a Software engineer is never the same. I have to be flexible and ready for anything.

As a Software engineer, I am responsible for several tasks regularly. I could be correcting production issues, working on design or architecture projects, attending meetings with clients or other engineers, or creating new product features.

As a Software engineer, I am supposed to work in different domains, and I have to be well-versed to work with various technologies. I furthermore make sure to work well with people from diverse backgrounds and cultures since I interact with clients, managers, other engineers, and users of their products regularly.

My day divides into three distinctive sections.

  • Morning Routine
  • Work
  • Resting and Family Time

Morning Routine

5:00am — 7:00am

Wake up, Prepare for the day, and Workout:

As a Software engineer, there are many things that I have to do to get ready for the day.

The first step in the morning routine is to wake up at the same time every day, even on weekends. It helps me regulate my sleep and circadian rhythms, making it easier to wake up in the morning.

Next, I shower, drink water, and meditate for around 10 minutes each day. In total, I spend about 30 minutes on these activities.

Morning Gratitude Journal:

Every morning, before I begin my day, I write in my morning journal. I devote roughly 5 minutes to this task. The morning journal with meditations has helped me reduce stress, boosted my mood, raised my focus, and increased my creativity.
